Growing up, I was the fifth person in my family to attend my grandmother’s “Charm School,” where childhood was shaped through rules of manners, order, and proper behavior. For nearly ten years, I learned how to sit, speak, eat, and interact “correctly,” while the colorful objects scattered throughout my grandmother’s immaculate home became quiet spaces for my imagination. Returning to these memories, I began to question how much of what I remember is an authentic recollection and how much has been constructed through repetition and expectation. My work revisits childhood as a fragmented, shifting landscape, using memory, objects, and personal history to explore the space between what we experienced, what we remember, and who we were taught to become.
